Wednesday, February 15th, 2012Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Nicklas Bendtner will be out for much longer due to the facial injuries he has suffered. Nicklas Bendtner has arrived on loan from Arsenal this season.
Due to the apparent lack of strikers within the Sunderland squad, Martin O’Neill will be having a headache with regards to the strikers due to the absence of Nicklas Bendtner over the course of a few weeks. Even though Nicklas Bendtner has not been prolific for Sunderland this season, his physical presence upfront is a major boost for Sunderland at this moment. Martin O’Neill is the kind of manager who prefers to play with the target man up front – and Nicklas Bendtner is exactly that kind of a player.
Teenager Connor Wickham has been used in place of Nicklas Bendtner for the past few matches. Martin O’Neill now confirm that Nicklas Bendtner could be out for more than a few weeks. The Danish striker suffered a broken nose playing in the recent match against Swansea. He was caught on the face by the Swansea player Angel Rangel during the recent meeting between the two clubs. Sunderland ended up winning the match 2-0, but they will have to worry about the injury to Nicklas Bendtner.
“He’s got a bit more than a broken nose. It’s difficult to put a timescale on it, but it’s going to be lengthy. We thought at one stage he might be okay. The early signs, even on Sunday morning, were that it looked as if it might be okay,” Martin O’Neill said after the match. Sunderland have been averaging around 2.2 points per game since the arrival of O’Neill. However, the former Aston Villa manager will be facing a headache if Nicklas Bendtner will be out for a few more weeks.
